MLK Day of Service

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work. – MLKDay.org

During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together as equals to address important community issues. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer. As he stated, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” (Corporation for National and Community Service)

Help us continue to make this a day ON and not a day OFF.

TeamVOLS truly thanks you for honoring Dr. King’s legacy and your selfless service.

Thank you to everyone who made the 10th annual MLK Jr. Day of Service the biggest event ever. With almost 400 volunteers, you gave over 1,000 hours of service to your community.

The 11th annual MLK Jr. Day of Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. Day-of registration begins at 7:30am in the UC, but you must register online in advance. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Due to extremely high numbers of pre-registered volunteers,  we can only accomidate those who have registered in advance.

Thank you for your understanding and thank you for all those who will be joining us this Saturday!
